Bindu la haya: 8 Venda owned businesses to look out for!

"Muthu ndi muthu nga vhathu"

When we are in high school we are encouraged to finish matric, go to University, get a good jobs.... that is how black African children make a living, that's was the only way most of us have been programmed to believe and follow anyways, while i strongly advocate for one getting a University qualification i can't help but think: "what if there was another way to attain economic empowerment as young black people?".

I remember last year, one of my friends telling me that he quit his full-time job as a mechanical engineer to start his own business, i felt a sense of admiration for him because i grew up in a house that had a string of small businesses, my late father, Mr TJ Sigama, was a teacher/educator by profession but the Department of Education was not his only source of income, he worked odd jobs on the side and had several businesses in Video production, brick-laying, Wood& sand distribution. TJ did business with so much confidence, where it failed, he learnt. Where it prospered, he pressed on.

Too many young people, particularly those in South Africa, lack the courage to take the first step to starting their own business. This could be due to any number of issues, including a difficult background, financial issues or long-term unemployment but without self-belief, young people will struggle to succeed at all. Yet there are those among us who have taken a bold move towards becoming their own bosses!

Here are 8 small businesses owned by young Venda people that we must cheer for and support:

7. The Social market PTA

I didn't know about this event before my younger brother told me about it a year ago. I began following(and stalking) one of the founders(pictured above) Maitelewawe. This is a very unique business style. By buying weird clothing from thrift shops and turning them into distinctive styles, Maitele and his business partners Thifhelimbilu and Sipokazi started the event- every first Sunday of the month they assemble fashionistas from near and far to showcase their self-made fashion style, this is one of the most famous social event in Pretoria.
